Only in Japan…

Japan is definitely not without flaws, nor do I intend to imply that it’s a perfect place to live, but it’s simple stuff like this that just warms your heart. This is a locked gate next to some storage for a business I walk past everyday and for some reason, they’ve kept the key hanging on the lock for he past few days.

The fact that it’s not broken into and that no one’s entered yet is just impressive to me. It reminds me of he stories you hear about small-town America in the 50s. “Leave it . . . → Read More: Only in Japan…

I know every bit counts, but…

One thousand sixty and THREE

I realize in this hard economy that “every little bit counts” and that there are people in this world who really do need to pinch every penny. I know being thrifty is important, and that we can’t overlook small expenses.

However! I have to say I was a little surprised to see this sign at the 7-Eleven near where I live. I mean, it’s not just one thousand and sixty yen per hour to work the overnight shift (10p to 8a), oh no. You will be paid a whole one thousand sixty THREE yen an hour. Now . . . → Read More: I know every bit counts, but…

A little late for a White Christmas

That, right there, is Tokyo station in the midst of the Blizzard of 2013, a mild dusting of snow in any of the colder capitals of the world (I’m looking at you, Seoul, DC, Moscow and others!), but works out to be a huge ordeal in Tokyo. 7-Eleven apparently didn’t get any shipments this morning, so no rice ball for me for lunch today.

First world problems and all that. You’re probably living a pretty good life when the biggest worry of your day is that you can’t eat the same thing for lunch that you always do . . . → Read More: A little late for a White Christmas

Out with the old and in with the new! – Jason!, 2013 edition

Wow.. how long has it been since I’ve written something? Anything? In all honesty, not long at all (if you follow the twitter posts on the right or any of my ramblings on Facebook or mixi, you’d see that I ramble pointless quite often, actually… typically throughout the day). But for all intents and purposes, yes, I’ve been missing for awhile. I could check the date of my last post right now, if I wanted to, but I don’t think I really want to know.

So anyway, yeah, “been busy, etc., etc.” and all that. You’ve heard it basically every time, . . . → Read More: Out with the old and in with the new! – Jason!, 2013 edition

Everyone needs a line of hair care products…

Everyone needs their own line of beauty products…

How is it that I never knew that I had my very own line of beauty products? And why is it that I’m not getting any money from them using my name? They can’t possibly be referring to any other Jason (I’m gonna tell you right now, there’s not a single person named Jason who isn’t weird…) nor can this be anything but an homage to me.

Or at least that’s what I like to pretend. I just ran across this today in a store near where I work and had to . . . → Read More: Everyone needs a line of hair care products…

A brief message to say…

That I’m making cookies.. because I can! There’s something about living in Japan that makes me miss home made, American-style cookies. The cookies they sell (and make) here are so.. bland? Probably healthier, as they lack much of the sugar, but no one eats cookies for their health. Not like anyone cares, but I think the big difference is the lack of brown sugar being used in their cookie recipes. The taste is just… off.

Makin’ Cookies

So, instead of studying kanji (which I really should be doing, as I have a test on Sunday), I made cookies! And . . . → Read More: A brief message to say…

Where’d my September go?!

Wow… September came and went without a peep from me. Now how’d that happen? I’m usually such a charming and talkative fellow (as you all know).

September was, if I were to summarize it into one word, busy. If I were to summarize it into one word emphatically, it was busy. If I were to… okay, you get the point. Since I can’t think of any good segues before I continue with a more interesting topic, let me throw some photos at you!

Better than Green Rice

First off, we’ve got some blue rice (and the delicious mabo dofu. . . . → Read More: Where’d my September go?!

Summer Vacation, Ghosts, and Taxes

Spent the weekend feeling under the weather, but fortunately I’ve managed to make a full recovery after 2 days of eating soup and rolling around my apartment floor while watching travel shows about the best food across the US.

Actually, scratch that. Watching TV shows about people eating large volumes of food probably wasn’t a good idea. But hey, since when have I been known for good ideas?? I do stuff and then let the good and bad sort themselves out after the fact. Let’s not dwell on that! At least you can have some exciting stories in the end, . . . → Read More: Summer Vacation, Ghosts, and Taxes

You, me, and the Olympics

I know everyone’s excited and thrilled, and full of exciting excitement nowadays (trust me, I spend my days surrounded by sleepless people)… but I just have to get something off my chest:

I have absolutely no interest in the Olympics.

In my 26 years of being alive, I’ve watched an entire one Olympic event. Ever. That was back in 2008 (Beijing Olympics) when I went to a student’s house and it was on TV (basketball, I think). Honestly, I think that’s pretty impressive… but that’s coming from an non-Olympian such as myself, so who am I to say anything?

It’s not . . . → Read More: You, me, and the Olympics

Really, Microsoft?

You often hear about silly misspelled words or phrases in other countries across the internet. Living in Japan, obviously I hear (and see) a lot of examples related to Japan and the use of English in Japan.. but this one caught me by surprise today.

Windows Live

I should mention that I’m using a normal laptop I bought here in Japan. Windows 7, Japanese, no changes. I bought it back in March, actually. And so when I saw this today, I was.. well.. surprised.

Really, Microsoft?
